IMPORTANT NEWS: Fall 2020 Programs

Hello Everyone,

September is fast approaching and we have important news for everyone. We will continue operating VIRTUALLY, with Spectrum’s programming relaunching on September 8. We hope to be back in the studio in the near future, but we are currently not able to make any predictions.

Registration will open on August 24, with priority given to participants from WINTER 2020. Please read the registration instructions carefully. Everyone will be added to the Waiting List first, before applications are approved on an individual basis.

In addition, please read the program covid-19 updated descriptions carefully. You will be able to see detailed information in each program’s webpage and registration sections. All programs have been remodelled to fit the online format. For some of you, this may mean that your creative style fits better in a different program than the one you were attending in Fall 2020.

WHAT’S NEW?

PLUS OPTION In-studio programs allow us to provide one-on-one support to many participants in the context of group programming. However, working online in a group requires a greater degree of independence on the end of participants, while also making it more difficult to give one-on-one support when needed, whether it be technical or creative guidance. We have therefore added an option to some programs to sign up for an extra individual session during the week to further develop your project with a one-on-one mentor.

ONE-ON-ONE MENTORS will guide you in the completion of your individual projects. We will be pairing you up with a skilled staff or professional from various specialized fields in the arts so that they can help you learn a technical skill in depth, read your script and help you plan your shoot or editing workflow, review your edit and help you improve the final cut, etc. This option is based on availability and matching with a mentor, so may take time to add on.

AFTERSCHOOL - 2 SHORTER SESSIONS Afterschool programming, which used to be 1.5-2 hour sessions once a week and available to youth and adults, will now run twice a week for 45 minutes each.

FRIDAY SOCIAL ONLINE will restart later in the season and you will receive information through our newsletter.

SOFTWARE AND TOOLS AT HOME We will be able to make recommendations for free software participants can use at home. While the Adobe Suite remains the best tool we can recommend, the pricing of this product is not accessible and we will adapt to various alternatives. While for some programs, having tools at home is ideal, other programs will allow for participants to remotely access software on Spectrum’s computers. Please do not purchase software without discussing it with us first.

80% DIGITAL FIRST 20% RETURN TO IN-STUDIO PLAN In the fall, we will continue to develop our virtual capacity, but alongside this, we will also be developing protocols for in-person filming days to return as needed. Our primary concern is to ensure we are providing a safe environment for our creators, staff and volunteers. Currently we are exploring the needs that arise from planning for up to 5 people to be in the studio at one time. This would be for filming/production activities only, until we establish our protocols and develop the tools needed to expand this.

This is in development, so stay tuned for updates on the 20% in-person plan via our newsletter.
