Friday April 23rd

We have a lot planned for all of you this Friday and Saturday!

We will kick things off at 4PM with a Spectrum Animations screening and special guest talk.

Curated by a neurodiverse panel, this screening will showcase work from Spectrum’s participants, mentors, and the extended community. Ranging from refined, complex work to abstract creative expression, the films will make you excited about animation.

Following the animation screening, join us for a Virtual Workshop tour with Steven Woloshen, an acclaimed Montreal-based animator, who will join us LIVE for a virtual tour of his studio, where a lot of the DIY magic behind his films happens.

His creative work is largely based on scratch-on-film, painting and drawing techniques applied directly to the celluloid, often utilizing custom-built machines that we will be able to check out on Friday. He also works at the NFB as a film conservationist.

In recent times due to COVID, a lot of us have had to learn to make films from home. This event is especially cool for those of you who want to continue making films from home on your own terms.

Steven Woloshen was born in Laval, Canada in 1960. For more than 30 years, he has passionately created over 50 award-winning, abstract films and time-based installations for festivals, galleries and museums. Twice nominated for Canada’s Governor General’s award, he has received numerous research and creation grants and, most recently, was awarded the 2016 René Jodoin lifetime achievement award and 2015 Wiesbaden Lifetime Achievement Award. Woloshen is a teacher, film conservationist, animator, craftsman and the author of two books, Recipes for Reconstruction: The Cookbook for the Frugal Filmmaker (2010), a hands-on manual for decay, renewal and other handmade, analogue film techniques, and Scratch, Crackle & Pop! A Whole Grains Approach to Making Films without a Camera (2015). Under his own banner, Scratchatopia, Woloshen has hosted solo retrospectives and taught handmade filmmaking techniques at workshops and master classes in Argentina, Morocco, USA, Slovenia, Australia, France, Great Britain, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Slovakia, Poland, Mexico as well as across Canada.

Saturday April 24th

The following day, join us at 3PM for the screening of Code of the Freaks* by Salomé Chasnoff, followed by a discussion on representation in film with Special guest Angelo Murreda

This screening is co-presented by Reelabilities Toronto and Spectrum Productions.

Code of Freaks is a feature-length documentary that critiques Hollywood representations of disabled characters by giving the mic to some of Hollywood’s most incensed and ignored critics – actual disabled people. The screening will be followed by a discussion on representation in film with Special Guest Angelo Murredda.

Angelo Murredda is a Freelance film critic for Film Freak Central, Torontoist, and others as well as a teaching assistant and doctoral candidate in contemporary Canadian literature and film at the University of Toronto. Follow him on Twitter here.

Nous commencerons à 16 h avec une projection Spectrum Animations et une conférence spéciale.

Organisée par un panel neurodiverse, cette projection présentera le travail des participants, des mentors et de la communauté élargie de Spectrum. Allant du travail raffiné et complexe à l'expression créative abstraite, les films vous ferons aimer l'animation.

Après la projection d'animation, rejoignez-nous pour une visite d’atelier virtuel avec Steven Woloshen, un animateur montréalais de renom, qui se joindra à nous EN DIRECT pour une visite virtuelle de son studio, où se déroule une grande partie de la magie du DIY derrière ses films.

Son travail créatif est largement basé sur des techniques de scratch-on-film, de peinture et de dessin appliqués directement au celluloïd, utilisant souvent des machines sur mesure que nous pourrons découvrir vendredi. Il travaille également à l'ONF en tant que conservateur de films.

Ces derniers temps, à cause de la COVID, beaucoup d'entre nous ont dû apprendre à faire des films chez soi. Cet événement est particulièrement intéressant pour ceux d'entre vous qui souhaitent continuer à faire des films de chez soi, sur vos propres termes.

La projection sera suivie d'une discussion sur la représentation au cinéma avec l'invité spécial Angelo Murredda.
