INTRODUCING ZOF SEIFRIED

Introducing Zof Seifried - Passionate Nerd, Dedicated Director and Amicable Mentor!

This fall we have so many participants in all of our programs, and we've got some really exceptional staff to help guide those who are back in studio working on their own projects.

One of those is our Mentor, Zof Seifried (any pronouns), an experienced producer who is a natural at directing and can bring any script to life. They've done a wide variety of art and always have a super creative solution to any problem! I asked her how she got to this point in her career and where they plan to go from here!

What was your first creative exploit?

At first when I was a little kid I actually wanted to be a dancer! I wanted to go professional and went to a local studio but it didn't work out so I went to the open house for a theatre instead. It felt like a natural move to go to theatre since I had written some plays in high school and I could write about my life stories in an artful way. It helped me process a lot of things without the pressure of the people around me. Also I realized I prefer being behind the stage and directing actors in delivering my scripts.

You started directing in high school already!? What did you learn in those first few years?

Yea, I was only 13! I directed a lot of silly stuff first, just comedic short films with my friends. As I made longer films I started leaning into a lot more dramatic shorts. I learned the hard way that editing is really important; with one scene in particular I had to edit a shot where two women were hiding under stairs from bombs and I didn't even know how to zoom in on Adobe Premiere. I had a friend tutor me to help finish that scene and it turned out great! From there I've learned so much and my work is getting better with every project. I also find a lot more value in the technical sides of filmmaking, like lighting and camera work!

It's cool to hear how you started out! What would you say your creative style is?

I really like hyper-realism, bringing out the most life-like detail out of photos and film. It looks odd to some people but I love it!

How did you hear about Spectrum and what do you love about working here?

I heard about the studio through Concordia from some mutual students. I started working online only first, so when I had my interview Felipe was at home and Sonya had a star-filled galaxy background on zoom! I didn't know too much about Spectrum at that point, so it was really exciting getting to come to the studio for the first time last year. I've enjoyed getting to know all the staff and participants better.

That's really sweet! What do you hope to accomplish at this step in your career?

I really want to finish university and get back into my own artistic practice. From there I can figure out my own career path. Also getting Behind the Camera Club to take off! Ke and I spent a long time revamping it and I really want to see it succeed.

Same here! I really can't wait to see what you create with the participants in the future!

Zof is the Mentor for Behind the Camera Club, our new group for for girls and transfem, transmasc, gender non-conforming and/or questioning autistic youth to build community and explore media creation. We still have some spots open, so if you're interested sign up here!

Nerd passionné, directeur dévoué et mentor sympathique !

Cet automne, nous avons un grand nombre de participants à tous nos programmes, et nous disposons d'un personnel vraiment exceptionnel pour aider à guider ceux qui sont de retour en studio pour travailler sur leurs propres projets.

L'un d'entre eux est notre mentor Zof Seifried (tous les pronoms), un producteur expérimenté qui a un don naturel pour la réalisation et qui peut donner vie à n'importe quel scénario. Elle a réalisé une grande variété d'œuvres et a toujours une solution super créative à n'importe quel problème ! Je lui ai demandé comment elle était arrivée à ce stade de sa carrière et où elle comptait aller à partir de maintenant !

Quel a été votre premier exploit créatif ?

Au début, quand j'étais petite, je voulais être danseuse ! Je voulais devenir professionnelle et je suis allée dans un studio local, mais ça n'a pas marché, alors je me suis rendue aux portes ouvertes d'un théâtre. Cela m'a semblé naturel d'aller au théâtre, car j'avais écrit quelques pièces au lycée et je pouvais raconter ma vie d'une manière artistique. Cela m'a aidé à traiter beaucoup de choses sans la pression des gens qui m'entouraient. Je me suis également rendu compte que je préférais être derrière la scène et diriger les acteurs dans l'exécution de mes scénarios.

Vous avez commencé à réaliser des films au lycée déjà !? Qu'as-tu appris au cours de ces premières années ?

Oui, je n'avais que 13 ans ! J'ai d'abord réalisé beaucoup de choses stupides, juste des courts métrages comiques avec mes amis. Comme je faisais des films plus longs, j'ai commencé à me pencher sur des courts métrages plus dramatiques. J'ai appris à mes dépens que le montage est très important ; dans une scène en particulier, j'ai dû monter un plan où deux femmes se cachaient sous des escaliers pour échapper à des bombes et je ne savais même pas comment zoomer dans Adobe Premiere. J'ai demandé à un ami de me donner des cours particuliers pour m'aider à terminer cette scène et le résultat a été formidable ! À partir de là, j'ai beaucoup appris et mon travail s'améliore à chaque projet. Je trouve aussi beaucoup plus de valeur dans les aspects techniques de la réalisation de films, comme l'éclairage et le travail de caméra !

C'est cool d'entendre comment tu as commencé ! Quel est, selon toi, ton style créatif ?

J'aime vraiment l'hyperréalisme, faire ressortir les détails les plus réalistes des photos et des films. Cela peut paraître étrange pour certains, mais j'adore ça !

Comment avez-vous entendu parler de Spectrum et qu'est-ce qui vous plaît dans votre travail ici ?

J'ai entendu parler du studio à Concordia par des étudiants communs. J'ai d'abord commencé à travailler en ligne seulement, donc quand j'ai eu mon entretien, Felipe était à la maison et Sonya avait un fond de galaxie rempli d'étoiles sur le zoom ! Je ne savais pas grand-chose de Spectrum à ce moment-là, alors c'était vraiment excitant de venir au studio pour la première fois l'année dernière. J'ai apprécié d'apprendre à mieux connaître le personnel et les participants.

C'est très agréable ! Qu'espérez-vous accomplir à ce stade de votre carrière ?

J'ai vraiment envie de terminer l'université et de me remettre à ma propre pratique artistique. À partir de là, je pourrai définir mon propre parcours professionnel. Et aussi faire décoller le Behind the Camera Club ! Ke et moi avons passé beaucoup de temps à le réorganiser et je veux vraiment le voir réussir.

Pareil pour moi ! J'ai vraiment hâte de voir ce que vous allez créer avec les participants à l'avenir !

Zof est le mentor du Club Derrière la Caméra, notre nouveau groupe pour les filles et les jeunes autistes transfem, transmasc, non-conformes au genre et/ou en questionnement. L'objectif est de créer une communauté et d'explorer la création médiatique. Il reste encore quelques places, alors si vous êtes intéressés, inscrivez-vous ici !
